1/31/2005: He continues to do well in therapy. He of course has some moments where he feels good and others where he doesn't feel so good. He's had some numbness and pain in the arm where his blood clot is, they're going to be checking that out. Also pray that they will successfully be able to remove his "blood clot catcher" this week.
1/27/2005: Daryl got his trache out--yeah! He just has a piece of tape over the hole while it heals. His eating is also going well...it seems like he's getting his appetite back. Keep praying for protection and continued improvement.
1/25/2005: Daryl is doing very well in his therapy and training. They also were able to take him off of oxygen. Keep praying for protection, and HEALING! I'd still rather see him walk out of the hospital even though he's getting good at wheeling himself.
1/23/2005: Well the Cavin v. Hope game was delayed due to snow...but Daryl still got to take a field trip anyway! He went to the park and the mall. As you can imagine it was a strenuous trip, but certainly a huge step. He has enjoyed the company of his cousins David & Elizabeth this week, whom many of you know from Calvin. He also got a smaller trache, which his helping prepare him for when he will get to live without a hole in his neck again.
1/22/2005: The procedure to remove the arch bars from his mouth was successful. They also took out his main IV, and they're cutting back on his tube feeding, so a lot of progress is being made. Pray for protection from infections and complications so he can continue this good progress. Today he is going to try to take his first off-campus field trip out of the hospital to watch the Calvin vs. Hope game via satellite with a group of Calvin alumni.
1/20/2005: He continues to progress in his therapies. Pray for success with a surgery scheduled for tomorrow morning (Friday) to remove the arch-bars from his mouth which were holding his jaw together as it healed.
1/19/2005: They're treating the new infection with antibiotics rather than removing the infected line. Daryl has continued to eat a bit more, and also received a new trache which allows him to talk whenever he wants to.
1/17/2005: Daryl has been battling a new infection which may cause them to have to remove his central IV line even though he's not a big fan of people messing with the inside of his jugular. The good news is that he's continuing to improve in other ways. I watched him eat a plate of hot wings yesterday which was quite encouraging.
1/15/2005: After about two really good days, Daryl is now fighting a fever and likely a new infection. Please pray that all infections would leave his body and that he would be protected from getting any more of them.
1/13/2005: A very good day today. Daryl was able to talk for almost the entire day. His lungs are doing better, and his stomach is a little better too now that they are able to treat the problem which was causing the pain.
1/12/2005: Some great news is that Daryl's lungs are healing. He is still coughing a lot of crud and undergoing respiratory treatments, but the lungs themselves are getting better. In other news, the likely source of Daryl's stomach problems are some ulcers in his lower esophagus which are causing pain and acid reflux. Pray for healing of these ulcers and for success in another procedure scheduled to move and clean his "blood clot catcher" device.
1/10/2005: Daryl posted a new message today, so you can read an update in his own words. You can see it here. Thank you so much for continuing to pray for Daryl when you think of it!
1/8/2005: We finally got to do Christmas last night with the family. Daryl celebrated by drinking half a can of rootbeer and eating some green jello, but unfortunately he couldn't keep it down which was messy! Pray that he can eat and digest food. Other than that it was a fairly good day; he's continuing to sit up and talk more. Breathing is still a struggle and he needs prayer that those lungs be healed.
1/6/2005: Daryl is doing a little better yet, after a fairly bad day yesterday which included an allergic reaction to an antibiotic. He has been coughing a lot of junk out of his lungs today, and was able to sit up all day long. Continue to pray for his lungs and that he would be able to eat without problems.
1/5/2005: Daryl is doing a little better, but still struggling. The respiratory treatments are very painful, and he is experiencing much discomfort due to his stomach not working too well, etc.
1/4/2005: Daryl is having a very hard time; coughing up a lot of blood, vomiting, etc. He never fully got over the pneumonia, and now it seems he has another respiratory ailment. He's also very discouraged because his digestive system isn't properly digesting the food they are putting into him. Let's join together and pray fervently like we did during the first week after his accident.
1/3/2005: Daryl has been battling a fever today, much discomfort and difficulty breathing as he's been constantly coughing up chunks (of mucus, flesh, or who knows what). Continue to pray for healing and protection.
1/2/2005: I talked to Daryl on the phone again today, and he's definitely continuing to improve in many ways but also is having several difficulties at the moment including breathing (coughing up nasty stuff), various pains, headache, and possibly another infection like a cold or something. Please pray for strength and protection.
1/1/2005: Happy New Year! Today Daryl posted a message of his own, which you can read here. Thank you all for your continued support and prayers for Daryl and our family. Be blessed!
