12/31/2004: I received a wonderful phone call today...it was Daryl! Yes, they are now letting him talk for about 40 minutes a day. It was great to hear his voice and get the update from him in person as I still have been avoiding visiting due to myself having a flu bug. He is apparently doing much better, although still having breathing issues (he had to hang up after one minute due to a coughing fit).

12/29/2004: Daryl got moved to a new room today which is nice because it's private, but also smaller and as you know it's always a pain to move. Other than that, he's continuing to improve in small ways, and they are starting up a feeding tube again to get him some nutrition.
12/28/2004: Daryl did well again today; he's sitting up longer and getting stronger. However he's still having much difficulty breathing, and in fact had to receive some emergency respiratory care today. Continue to pray for his breathing and for protection from attacks that would try to set him back.
12/27/2004: Daryl is feeling a little better today; headache is better, lungs are better (though still difficult), and had a fairly lengthy PT session today. Keep praying for continued improvement and healing!
12/26/2004: The procedure successfully removed 600 cc's of fluid from around his lung (yes that's as much as a 20oz. slurpy). He has been feeling rather lousy today and mostly been resting. Continue praying for his breathing, for him to be able to eat, for a headache to be healed, for protection (something was accidentally dropped on his head yesterday--Not what he needs!), for rest, and for courage.
12/25/2004: Merry Christmas! The trache replacement went well, although it has caused Daryl to cough a lot. He is now scheduled for the lung procedure this morning. They will stick a big needle in his back while watching it under X-ray to locate and suck out fluid from around his lung. Pray that this would go well and that it would help him breathe. Pray for strength and health for my mom and rest of family who are supporting him on a daily basis and that they would be able to have joy this Christmas.
12/24/2004: It has been one month since the accident; praise God for the healing progress! It's also Chistmas Eve, a special time for our family as we open presents and celebrate on this day. Unfortunately due to being sick, this will be the first time in 25 years not spending time with my family eating Swedish meatballs and/or Swedish pancakes. Today they have scheduled to give Daryl a new trache, and another procedure to remove fluid from around his lungs. Pray that these two procedures would be successful.
12/22/2004: Daryl continues to recover and rest while visiting a few friends. A lengthy procedure to move the blood clot filter was successful. Keep praying for all the same stuff!
12/21/2004: He started some new physical therapy today which is wonderful, though it also added to his exhaustion which was accentuated by another day of sitting and visiting friends while battling pneumonia, etc. Pray that his various ailments would heal and that he would have the strength needed to maximize the benefits of his daily routines.
12/20/2004: Daryl again had a good day, but was very tired. Our conference with the doctor was informational, mainly reiterating what we already know. For those of you that don't know, the biggest injury is his spine which is classified as a T8 type B which means he currently has some sensation below the injury but no motor function. Pray that his pneumonia will be fully healed, and that he will be able to eat soon.
12/19/2004: Daryl sat up for a long time today and visited with some good friends. He's lost a lot of weight due to not being able to eat. Pray that he will be able to eat soon, and that he will get good rest and continue this positive trend of improvement.
12/18/2004: It's been a very difficult and strenuous week. Daryl is doing much better than he was a few days ago. His temperature is mostly normal, he's still able to drink (but not eat yet), and he's increased his "sitting-up time" the last couple days. Continue to pray for healing and protection, and also that he would be able to get good sleep.
12/16/2004: It's all relative but his neck is in less pain today so that's a good thing! Continue to pray for overall healing and mental stamina, and for success in a procedure to move or remove a filter which caught a blood clot (if doctors decide its the best course of action).
12/15/2004: Another difficult day. He went into Radiology to remove the IV from his arm and put in a new central line, but they ended up putting it in his neck which has caused him constant pain since then. He was allowed to drink again today, but some of it showed up in his lung fluid which is also a problem. Please continue to intercede for Daryl as we're fighting new battles each day.
12/14/2004: Daryl is very tired and discouraged due to not being able to eat or drink, and is fighting several secondary problems. Pray for strength and encouragement as he endures what is perhaps the most difficult time for him yet.
12/13/2004: He's a bit disappointed that they put him back on straight IV fluids to help his stomach rest (no food or drink). Also a test showed one lung is doing better while the other is a little worse. Pray for his lungs and his stomach/digestive to heal quickly.
12/12/2004: Daryl's fever is down a little more again today which is great news. He has been spending most of his time resting which is what he needs. His biggest concerns at the moment are his stomach and breathing. He is anxious to overcome these issues and get healthy enough to focus on bigger things.
12/11/2004: The fever seems to be more under control today as he continues to rest. He did get to eat some soft food today (like yogurt), after about two days of not being able to eat. He's been having stomach pain, so pray that he will be able to digest food and eat with no problems.
12/10/2004: 12/10/2004: He is still battling a fever likely caused by an unknown infection. We must stay strong for Daryl and continue to intercede on his behalf. Many people are joining us today in a unified day of fasting and prayer of thanksgiving, praise, repentance, & petitioning for healing.
12/09/2004: Today Daryl is fighting a new infection and fever of 103 fegrees. Here's already on antibiotics, so this infection is a major concern. They are currently trying to determine the location and type of infection. Pray that this infection would immediately leave his body!
12/08/2004: Daryl is adjusting to the new location. Although it's a great step, it's also a difficult transition as he now must begin to focus more on his spinal injury. Breathing also continues to be a big task. Pray that his spirits would be lifted and that he would keep the faith for his healing as he is forced to face the current physical "reality".
12/07/2004: Daryl was moved out of the MTU into a medical wing of the adjacent hospital which specializes in spinal injuries. This is another huge step! He has written that he's taking it day-by-day right now, and the prayers and encouragements are much of his motivation to continue fighting. God hears our prayers, so stay with us in this battle!
12/06/2004: The breathing seems to have improved slightly, as he is now able to cough a little. Continue to pray for encouragement and healing.
12/05/2004: Daryl's biggest struggle at the moment continues to be his breathing. He still has pneumonia, and it's sort of like he needs to overcome this before he can have energy to fight the next battle. Keep praying that his lungs will be healed quickly and that the rest of his body would remain free from infections.
12/04/2004: Daryl continues to recover in the MTU. We got to wheel him down the hallway briefly during his 2 hours of sitting time. Keep praying for his lungs and protection from infections throughout. Pray that his spirit would be encouraged and that his faith for healing would remain strong, as the outward reality of the accident seems to be starting to sink in.
12/03/2004: I was able to give Daryl a much needed haircut today during his sitting-up time. He wrote that it's the prayers, notes, and small gifts (like the jello he got to eat) that are keeping him going right now--so keep it coming! Keep praying for his breathing, protection from infections, and that God would give Daryl strength, joy and faith.
12/02/2004: Daryl was able to drink juice today, which he appreciated very much! He also sat up in a chair with the help of a back brace for two hours. His breathing is still his biggest struggle on a moment-by-moment basis because of the trache and fluid in his lungs, etc. Continue to pray for physical healing and mental strength.
12/01/2004: Moved out of the ICU into a multi-trauma unit, which is a big step. He is writing with a pen and paper, and started reading everyone's notes and prayers from the message board. Continue to pray for his breathing as it seems to be one of his most laborious tasks, and for protection from infections.
