News updates I found interesting, outrageous, or humorous…

Couple Finally Reveals Child’s Gender, Five Years After Birth – This story kind of makes me mad. I know this comment has been made many times, but I hope the parents have been saving a therapy fund in addition to a college fund.

Utah School Board Says Cougar Mascot Too Offensive To Women – The best part of this article might be the comments section, which includes the following classic:

I’m still trying to figure out what actual cougars have ever done to anyone that they should be degraded by being compared to older women interested in younger men. Is this common behaviour among cougars in the animal kingdom? I believe they are owed an apology.

Man accused in tree poisoning case to go to trial after turning down plea bargain for 13 year prison sentence – I don’t care how much you love your alma mater or favorite college football team, a guy shouldn’t be in prison for 13 years for poisoning a stand of trees. Maybe he should spend 13 years of his life getting part of his paycheck deducted to pay for new trees to be planted, and he definitely should spend 13 weekends planting trees… but 13 years in prison? Na. Even Charles Barkley says that’s crazy.

Exclusive: Let me run for another country, says Bekele after federation bans Ethiopians from London 2012 – The greatest 10,000 meter and cross country runner of all time is currently banned from competition because he didn’t show up to a national team training camp because he was recovering from injury and refusing to run all of his workouts on the Mondo (hard surface) track at the national stadium in Addis Ababa. Sure Kenenisa Bekele is putting over a million dollars of his own money into building a long-distance-focused track specifically so he and other Ethiopian distance runners can train just south of the Ethiopian capitol, and that he is also the current reigning Olympic 5000m and 10000m champ and this is an Olympic year… Ethiopia doesn’t need him in London this summer. (For some reason I have a feeling he’ll still be wearing the Ethiopian uniform to race the biggest races this year – but if not, we’d love to have him here in the US).

I don’t know what lead me to post these links, but I thought they were all interesting and then was reflecting on the crazy state of information and news and the bizarre role that media plays in our lives. I was trying to think of a comparison to the classical world, and I thought of Herodotus. He was a historian of sorts, but his his view of the world was an ethnocentric survey based partly on personal travels and experience, and partly on rumors and stories that he had heard – and I’m not sure our news sources have really gotten any better since.

    1. Daryl says:

After rethinking the tree poisoning guy, I realized that I do think he should be punished harshly, but not because of the “cultural value” of the trees. No, his punishment should be because of the environmental harm – less oxygen production, etc. I don’t want it to seem like I would ever approve of harming/killing trees or other vegetation. I would not. The ecological health of our planet is important.
